The Q&A Archives: mulch question

Question: We have been mulcing in the past with 2' bags of mulch. We are converting this season to yrds of bulck mulch. We need the convertion of 1400 2' bags of mulch to yrds and also 2400 bags to yrds. Thanks for your help. Jim

Answer: Bags of mulch are usually 2 cu. ft. (sometimes more or less) so, for a 2 cu. ft. bag, it takes 13.5 bags to = a cubic yard. So, 1400 bags is equal to roughly 100 cubic yards. If you have measurements, this is the formula for figuring the material you would need Length in feet x Width in feet x Depth in inches then divide by 27. (A cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. and most mulch is laid 3 inches deep).
