Toba Hawthorn (Crataegus x mordenensis 'Toba') and Winter King Hawthorn (Crataegus viridis 'Winter King') will grow in zone 6. Toba has pink/red flowers; Winter king has white flowers. Other choices are Crape myrtle, red buckeye, and crabapple trees. They are all spring bloomers and might make good substitutes.
