The Q&A Archives: Pruning wild rose bush

Question: I have a wild rose bush with yellow flowers each stem is 6 to 7' and the bush is about 7' around neeed to prune to rebuild fence it abutes - do I thin it from center by removing 1/4 and then shorten all stems? This is how I was told to do my lilacs is the rose bush the same?

Answer: Rose bushes are much different than lilacs. In fact a rambling or wild rose can take lots of pruning without harm. You can cut the rose down by half without harm. It will simply regrow new flowering stems this spring and summer. Good luck with your new fence, and with your rose!
