| These crops were traditionally grown in hills by Native American tribes. Hilled soil warms and drains more quickly in the spring, and gives roots loose soil to grow in. However, if you're in the more arid region of New Mexico, you may find it beneficial to actually create depressions in which to plant your crops, and hill soil in ridges around the depressions (a planting technique of the Anasazi). This catches and retains rainwater, and creates a windbreak to protect seedlings. Hope this helps! |
