I live where the soil is clay, and I was wanting to make a garden in planters or boxes, ( 4 x 8 or 12).I would like to know how tall they need to be, if I am on the right track, and what they need to be made out of! Can you help me with this? |
Planter boxes are a great way to garden when your soil is hard and difficult to work. You can use any lumber available; treated lumber will last longest but you can build your planters and then paint a wood preservative on all the exposed wood and they should last many, many years. Make the planters at least 18 inches deep. This will provide plenty of root room for your new plants and help keep the soil from overheating. Fill the planters with top soil or mix your own by adding 50/50 garden soil and compost. This will help the soil drain quickly yet hold just the right amount of water to keep the soil moist. Be sure to drill lots of drainage holes in the bottom of the planter to allow excess water to drain. Good luck with your project! |
