How do I prepare a garden around my shrubs? Do I need them transplanted or keep them where they are?

You should be able to cultivate the soil around your shrubs without having to remove the shrubs. Dig with a shovel or scuff up the soil with a hoe and remove any weeds, then spread a few inches of compost or other organic matter over the bare soil and dig it in. Level the soil and top with an additional 2-3 inches of compost or other organic matter. This mulch will help suppress weeds all season long. Enjoy your garden!
