Before you get started - it is not a good idea to put a planter directly around an established tree. If you add soil over the tree's root system it can suffocate the roots. From what you've written I get the impression that's what you have in mind. It would be better for your tree to have shrubs planted directly in the soil beneath the canopy than to have a raised bed constructed over the roots.
