I bought a bag of Iris ( Ceaser's Brother) and Day Lillys ( Kwanza) To my surprise I found that they are not

You planted them just right! Irises and daylilies grow from rhizomes which are storage organs, just like bulbs are, but rhizomes are longer and narrower. They serve the same purpose, though - storing carbohydrates for the plants to use during the growing season. Best wishes with your new plants!
