I'm looking for evergreen shrubbery to backdrop a cottage type garden that will withstand full sun and heat in west Tennessee, zone 7 (almost zone 6). Preferably something that will bloom. I just don't want the garden to look so bare in the winter. What would you recommend?

Here are a few possibilities:

Glossy abelia (Abelia grandiflora) 4-6' tall, pinkish flowers in summer/fall
Hollies (Ilex spp.) -- need male & female for berries; many cultivars with various mature heights--6 to 20+ ft.
Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) -- height varies with cultivar (no flowers)
California privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) -- up to 12' tall (no flowers)

Rhododnedrons are also a possibility, but they may not withstand the harsh sun, prefering a little shade.
