I just bought 20 bags of bark nuggets. The directions say NOT to allow the nuggets to touch the tree trunk. Question 1: Why? 2nd question: are deco bark chips (forest product) safe to use around my tortise? I already know coco fiber and products aren't safe. Is the bark treated? thank you

I don't think the bark is treated but you might want to contact the manufacturer (check the label for contact information). It is never a good idea to place any mulch material against a tree trunk. Mulches can retain water and that water can rot the bark of a tree trunk. Keep any mulch material away from the trunks of your trees to ensure the bark remains dry and healthy.
