The Q&A Archives: Interesting Flowering Crab Selection

Question: My mother has requested a flowering crab for Mothers Day. She lives in Southern New Hamshire and would like one "with interesting branching habit rather than upright" Could you suggest one? She is not particular about color and doesn't care if it produces fruit.

Answer: Some of what she is looking for can be achieved by pruning and training the tree. But here are a few suggestions:

Malus 'Louisa' -- extreme weeping habit, pink flowers, yellow fruit
M. 'Molten Lava' -- weeping habit, red buds/white flowers, red fruit
M. 'Red Jade' -- graceful weeper with pink buds/white flowers
M. sargentii -- dwarf, spreading branches, mature height of 6 to 8'
M. 'White Cascade' -- graceful weeper, white flowers

All these are available from Carroll Gardens, 800-638-6334
