The Q&A Archives: birds building nests

Question: Our local museum is a 2 1/2 story building and birds are trying to build nests in the high crooks of our downspouts. Any suggestions on discouraging them and cleaning up their messes off alum gutters, concrete?

Answer: If you've tried all the scare tactics - aluminum foil stringers, plastic owls and plastic snakes, you may have to drape the area temporarily with bird netting or direct a stream of water from a hose to discourage them. Power washing generally will remove their droppings from concrete and gutters. The good new is that birds consume all kinds of insects, which keep our gardens healthier!
