Here are a few suggestions for your Chicago garden: Rudy Haag Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus 'Rudy Haag') A true compact form with the same wonderful fall color. Height 3-5', Spread 3-5'. Hummingbird Clethra (Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird') Fragrant, white flowers and more compact, an outstanding plant. Tolerant of salty conditions and it is very pest free. Height 2-4', Spread 2-4'. Pink Spires Clethra (Clethra alnifolia 'Pink Spires') An attractive rounded to spreading shrub. Flowering in late summer, pink to rose buds open to sweetly fragrant, pink flowers. Tolerant of salty conditions and it is very pest free. Height 4-6', Spread 3-5. Dwarf Red Tipped Dogwood (Cornus pumila ) A dwarf variety with new growth tipped in red. Height 2-4' Spread 2-4' Dwarf Fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii) A small, loose growing shrub with beautiful, white, fragrant flowers in spring. Leathery, dark green summer foliage turns a striking orange-red color in fall. Dwarf Fothergilla and broadleaf evergreens make an especially nice combination. Height 2-4', Spread 2-4'. Hope one of these suggestions works in your landscape.
