The Q&A Archives: Weak Stems on Vegetable Plants

Question: small veg garden (toms.,squash, peppers, etc). plants appear healthy but where stem meets the soil, stems becoming thin and weak and the plants are falling over. Help!!

Answer: You are keeping the soil too moist or you've used some hot compost or other organic matter that is heating up as it decomposes. What you describe is called damping off in seedlings at it is a fungus that appears when soils remain too wet for too long. Try to water more carefully by watering deeply then allowing the top half inch of soil to dry out before watering thoroughly again.
