I live in Longmont Colorado.. zone 4-5 and transplanted six large free potentilla plants last fall and did not cut them back when I transplanted them. Should I cut them back now or wait to see if there is different green growth from the bottom and trim off brown wood.

Free is always good! You can cut the plants down to ground level now and new sprouts should emerge from the crowns of the plants later this spring. It is not harmful to the plants - they normally die down to ground level in the winter in cold regions. Best wishes with your landscape!
