Start by removing any weedy growth in your veggie bed and then spreading 4-5 inches of organic matter over the top, digging it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Level the soil and plant your vegetables. If you have wildlife visiting your garden you may want to fence your vegetable garden to keep critters away. Some apple trees are self-fruitful but they will bear a heavier crop if another apple tree is in the vicinity. If you choose to plant another apple tree, make sure it is compatable with the one you already have (save the label so you know what cultivar you are growing). Best wishes with your landscape.
