I have a spot, north side of house. Its in the shade from Sept to May-then full sun for hot summer days. Can you suggest a bush or shrub?

I would choose a deciduous shrub that can take that hot summer sun. Since a deciduous shrub won't be growing during the months it is in shade, it won't matter at all to it. Try dwarf pomegranate or New Mexico privet or Texas Ranger. I grow Cassia in a similar winter shade/hot summer sun area in my garden and it is perfectly happy. Hope these suggestions are helpful.
