What would you recommend to get rid of pesty weeds in the lawn (without using pesticides)? I have a huge yard too. Would it be okay for me to dethatch the yard first, then plant grass seed? Would this solve my problem?

A thick, healthy turf will crowd out weeds so thatching and reseeding is a good first step. Regular fertilizing, watering and mowing will help keep your grass as healthy as possible. After you have reseeded and the lawn has been mowed twice you can apply a corn gluten based pre emergent to your lawn and it will help keep weed seeds from germinating. Good luck with your lawn!
