| If your lawn is in really bad shape you can start all over, or you might be able to renovate what is already there. Starting over means rototilling everything up, raking out the debris, spreading compost over the soil, tilling again, then leveling the soil in preparation for new seeds or for laying sod. It is a lot less work to rehabilitate an old lawn. Here's how: If it's weedy, use a weed and feed fertilizer. Then rake out the dead patches and overseed the entire lawn with fresh seeds. Keep the lawn well watered and mowed at the right height and plan on feeding it 4 times a year. If, in the fall, it still doesn't look terrific, you can rent a core aerator which takes plugs out of the soil. Leave the plugs on the ground (they will dissolve with the rain and water from the sprinkler). Then spread a thin layer of sand over the entire lawn. The sand will work its way into the holes where the plugs of soil came out and the sand will help loosen the soil and make it easier for the grass roots to take hold. Best wishes with your lawn |
