The Q&A Archives: How do I get grass to grow?

Question: My backyard is mainly shady. Stepping off the patio, there is 20' of bare area before wooded island. We've hydroseeded with no luck last year. Once again I have a dirt back yard. What should we do? I'd like grass.

Answer: Turfgrass loves sunshine. Although there are some shade tolerant grasses available, they don't live very long and you will need to reseed every few years in the shady spot you describe. If you really want grass there you'll have to resign yourself to reseeding on a regular basis. There are lots of shade loving ground covers you can use instead of grass if you want year around greenery in your backyard. I'd go with the groundcovers. They're much easier to maintain.
