My front yard is all shade and dirt. I do not seem able to keep grass growing in the shade. I get a good start with rye but then it also dies out. What do you recommend? Thank you.

Fescues are the most shade tolerant of all grasses, but they won't live more than a couple of years in shade so you will need to reseed every few years. Turfgrass thrives on sunshine. An alternative would be to forget the lawn and plant shade loving groundcovers instead. The nice thing about groundcovers is that they are low maintenance - no mowing, no fertilizing. If you have your heart set on a lawn, overseed with fescue or a grass seed mixture especially formulated for shady areas. Good luck with your landscape.
