Choose the least expensive product. Clay soil will be improved through the addition of organic matter over a period of several years. Compost is decomposed organic matter. Manure is also organic, but it is not as dense as finished compost. By weight you will get more from the compost than you will with the compost mixed with manure. Spread a 4-5 inch layer of the compost over your flower bed or vegetable bed, and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Plant you plants and then spread another 2-3 inches over the bare soil to help suppress weeds and slow water evaporation. At the end of the growing season you can dig the organic mulch into the soil and add fresh mulch. Repeating this for 3-4 years will help you build rich garden loam. Best wishes with your garden!
