I have a big dog ( Great Dane ) small lawn. I have learned to water down urine each time it works great. I did all winter this year and have the biggest dead grass mess that I never did when I didn't water down other years in winter. I live in Ohio. Why did my grass die when watering down urine in winter when it doesn't die is hot summer sun?

I imagine the water turned to ice under the snow and sent your lawn into a deep freeze. You can rake out the dead spots and reseed. I would still recommend watering the urine spots down - except in the snow. Just pitch the yellow snow with your shovel.
