Sowing Seeds of Marigolds and Zinnias - Knowledgebase Question

I am a new gardener. How do I grow plants from seeds successfully in South Florida? I have seeds for african marigolds and zinnias where these good choices for my area?

Those are excellent choices for your area. You can either sow the seeds into a prepared bed or you can sow them in individual containers and transplant them into the ground when they are larger. To sow directly in the ground, work some compost into the soil and then either sprinkle the seeds over the top of the soil or make shallow trenches (I use a garden rake) and plant the seeds in the trenches. The seeds are small and flat so you only need to barely cover them with compost or garden soil - just enough to keep them from blowing away. Water the bed often enough to keep the soil from drying out. Your marigolds should pop up in 5-7 days. Enjoy your marigolds!
