What you describe is normal for a plumeria. Plumeria rubra, Frangipani or Hawaiian Plumeria, is only just slightly tolerant of temperatures below 40F degrees. It's a deciduous shrub or small tree with thick pointed leaves that drop in winter or early spring. The leaves turn yellow and look blotchy just before they fall. It blooms from June-November if it receives full sunshine and is kept on the dry side during the winter months. Your plant should produce new leaves soon. Enjoy!
