Is it necessary to use vermiculite when creating the planting medium? I know composte and peat moss are one of the 3 but I can't locate vermiculite.

Vermiculite or perlite are both sold in small packages near the houseplant section of the garden center. An alternative would be to purchase bagged potting soil - they contain perlite and peat moss. Just mix potting soil in with your compost to make your growing medium. The goal is to have a quick draining growing medium for your intensive square foot garden.
