| I recently took out a patch of grass. I turned the soil over and took out as many of the roots as I could see. I put some compost in the area and are nw ready for planting my pernnial bulbs. What would be the best way to deter the grass and weeds from growing back. Cover the area with weed paper or add stuff like preen and then mulch? The area is about 13x5. Is 2 1/2 bgs of compost enough |
| Before you plant anything at all in your newly cleaned out bed, cover the entire bed with weed barrier landscape fabric and anchor it down well. It will eliminate sunlight and weed seeds won't sprout. When you are ready to plant your bulbs, simply cut holes in the weed barrier and plant them by reaching through the holes. When the bulbs sprout they will have an opening and will grow right through the opening. You can plant other things by simply cutting a hole or an X in the weed barrier to accommodate the roots. After you have finished planting everything you can place mulch, compost or shredded bark over the landscape fabric to disguise it. You should have enough compost for the area - depending upon how thick you spread it. |
