I received a delivery of top soil that does not look rich in organics. It is light and color and clumps (I am stuck with 6 yards). What can I do to help get rid of the clumps and enrich it? |
You can add some organic matter as you use the topsoil. Usually you have a choice when you order. Sounds like you've gotten straight topsoil. There's a 3-way mix which is a combination of soil, sand and organic matter. Adding compost, aged manure, shredded leaves, etc. will improve what you have. If you're using it to fill planter beds, dump the soil into the area and level it somewhat then spread 4-5 inches of compost or aged manure over the top and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. If you are using it for a turf area, spread it out and then add 2-3 inches of organic matter and mix it all together. The time you take now to add amendments to your soil will pay off in the future. Best wishes with your garden! |
