Spread a 4-5" layer over the top of the soil and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. After planting your veggies you can spread another 2-3 inches over the bare soil to help suppress weeds and slow evaporation. At the end of the season you can dig this mulch material into the bed and cover it with fresh compost. A few years of this ritual will help you build your garden soil into rich loam - and you'll have a bumper crop. Enjoy!
