The Q&A Archives: Fertilizing Lilacs

Question: When and how should I feed a lilac bush? It is about 4 ft tall - planted last year - bought from a local nursery at about that size.

Answer: Lilacs, among the easiest of all shrubs to grow, require minimal fertilizing and, if needed at all, but once every two years. I suggest a soil test to determine if your soil is extraordinarily deficient in any major nutrient and if the pH is appropriatefor lilacs (which require an alkaline soil).
