The Q&A Archives: Can you prune hydrangeas to any size?

Question: I just bought a macrophylla blue heaven hydrangea and was wondering if I could keep it pruned to about 2 feet by 2feet is that possible.

Answer: Hydrangea macrophylla can grow upwards of 8 feet tall and wide, unless you prune it down each year. You can keep it 3-4 feet tall and wide and still get it to flower. Much small and it may not flower for you.
