The Q&A Archives: More People Gardening?

Question: It seems to me that more people are gardening than ever before, especially in South Jersey. I'm also seeing many more varieties of plants. Do statistics from the garden industry bear this out or is it just my imagination?

Answer: Nationwide, consumer lawn and garden sales increased by 18% in 1997 over
the previous year from $22.5 billion in 1996 to $26.6 billion in 1997.
During the same time period participation in lawn and garden activities
increased from 65 million households in 1996 to 68 million households in
1997. I'd say that's a significant increase, not just your imagination!
