What do I need to add to top soil to grow vegetables? I sent my husband to the nursery for 1 cubic yard of garden mix (top soil and compost mix), but instead he brought home only top soil. We all ready placed the soil in our raised garden beds before I realized his mistake. What should I add to the top soil to get it ready for vegetables?

You can spread compost or aged manure over the top of the garden bed and dig it in to a depth of about 8 inches. This organic matter will help loosen the soil and make it drain quickly and, as it decomposes it will provide nutrients to the roots of your plants. I'd spread a 3-4 inch layer over the top of the soil and dig it in. Enjoy your garden!
