The Q&A Archives: Removing Privet Hedges

Question: What is the eaisy way to remove a privet hedge garden abd what is the shape of the root system? I think its the Cheyenne Privet.

Answer: Depending upon the size of the privet and how long it has been in the ground, you will find the majority of the roots concentrated directly beneath the shrub, in the top 12-18 inches of soil. There is no easy way to remove the root system. You'll just have to dig down all around each shrub and rock it back and forth until you get it loose enough to pull or dig out. Get as much of the rootmass as possible - you don't want them to resprout! Good luck with your project.
