why does the fruit split before they are ready to pick |
Sometimes the splitting is caused by inconsistent soil moisture, but most often the splitting is natural. That is the way the tree spreads the seeds. When grown for the grocery store they are picked early so they do not open and are neat and orderly in the store bins. But, if you go to any farm where pomegranates are grown you will see many along the roads that have dropped from the tree and burst open. These fruits are usually sweeter and juicier than the others. The only downside is that they don't keep very well so you will need to consume them right away. |
