| The only problems associated with growing similar plants near one another is cross pollination - when insects transfer pollen from one open flower to another. This is not a concern unless you plan on saving seeds from your fruits and vegetables to plant the following year. If you purchase fresh seeds for your vegetables every year, you don't have to worry about cross pollination and you can grow your suash and melons in the same bed without concern. Seeds from plants that are cross pollinated can have different characteristics from the parent plants so you might end up with a round zucchini or a pink cantelope if you saved the seeds from the squash or melons that you grow this year. Aside from that, you can safely plant all your veggies close to one another. This year's crop will be just fine. |
