The Q&A Archives: Encore azaleas

Question: My encores - older/newer shrubs in different spots are brown/shrivelled - were mulched and ferilized. Were growing/ blooming and green but are brown -not dead though.

Answer: Encore azaleas should be fed in spring but not until after your last average frost date. Feeding too soon will encourage fast growth, which can be sensitive to frost damage. So, a cold snap is a possibility, and so is over fertilizing. I'd just wait to see whether or not the plants replace the lost leaves. Let's hope so!
