The Q&A Archives: creating flower beds

Question: I want to know of a safe way to kill grass to create a flower bed. My problem is that I have several trees in the area I want to kill the grass, but not harm the trees. What is a safe product to use?

Answer: It depends on where the grass is in relation to the trees. Round Up is a contact killer and if you keep it on the grass but away from the tree trunks and leaves, it will kill the grass down to the roots but not translocate into the soil or travel down to the tree roots. If you're in doubt, you can use a flat shovel to get under the grass and slice under it, rolling it up as you go. Then dig out the roots and create your flower bed. Best wishes with your project!
