Annabelle hydrangea can freeze down to soil level and it will resprout and flower the following year. It isn't necessary to prune Annabelle, but you can if you want. Annabelle hydrangeas develop flowers on the new growth of the season. Pruning will encourage new growth and help you shape the shrub. So prune if it looks rangy, and prune as little or as severely as you want. It will bounce right back from any kind of pruning. Enjoy your garden!
