I have weeds that grow up in my garden area and what I was wondering is what can I apply to the area to kill the weeds with out harming the plants? I want the weeds to die so they dont come back after tilling the soil

While you can use a chemical weed killer, it will only kill the current weeds, it won't stop any weed seeds already in the ground from sprouting up later. The easiest way to address the problem is to till the garden, weeds and all, then rake out the weedy debris and cover the entire garden with landscape fabric weed barrier. Cut holes or X's in the fabric to plant your seeds or plant your starts. The weed barrier will keep weed seeds from germinating and you will have a weed free garden for years to come.
