I have a Southern Magnolia that has very sparse number of leaves as compared to other magnolias I have seen. Is there a variety of Magnolia that has sparse number of leaves? I have a picture and other info if necessary.

It is normal for Magnolia grandiflora to drop leaves in the spring (not the fall) before new growth, but sparse leaves can also be the result of too much shade and of water stress the previous summer. Make sure it is well watered throughout the summer, and I suspect it will leaf out and look fuller. If you haven't already, you might feed it with Holly Tone or other acidified fertilizer. Best wishes with your tree.
