The Q&A Archives: Necessary to prune crepe myrtle?

Question: Is it necessary to dead-head my crepe myrtle?

Answer: It is not necessary to deadhead your crape myrtle, however, since crape myrtles develop flowers on new growth, if you prune it back it will develop more new growth and some additional flowers later this season. Besides, pruning it back a bit will help it remain dense and thick rather than have thin, rangy branches. But, the choice is yours.
