I live in New York. My home faces north and has full shade
in the front. I've tried planting shrubs, but I don't
have luck with them. Most die off over the winter.
What can I plant?

That is a tough problem! Here are a couple of shrubs that will tolerate shade: Five leaf aralia (Eleutherococcus sieboldianus), mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), various species of boxwood (Buxus spp.). Azalea and rhododendrons may do well there too.
