I would like to create a privacy barrier. Can you recommend some evergreen trees/shrubs that will grow in partial to full shade in Zone 7? The trees/shrubs will be planted in well-drained soil near large, established hardwoods.

Thanks!

I would concentrate on native shrubs because they adapt so readily to the growing conditions you describe. Consider Ilex verticillata, Winterberry "Maryland Beauty", grows 5-6'. Itea virginica (Virginia Sweetspire) grows 3-5' tall; Mahonia bealeii (Leatherleaf Mahonia) grows up to 10'; Prunus virginiana (Common Chokecherry) can grow to 30 ft.; Rhododendron calendulaceum (Flame Azalea) grows to 10'; Sambucus canadensis (Elderberry) 5-9'; Viburnum trilobum (Cranberrybush Viburnum) 8-12'; Aronia arbutifolia (Red Chokeberry), 6-10'; Clethra alnifolia (Summersweet), 3-8'; Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) grows 3-5' tall and Hydrangea quercifolia (Oakleaf hydrangea) which grows 6-8 feet tall. Hope these suggestions are helpful.
