Dear Gardener,

I have Japanese Maples in pots, which I placed in my sun room for the winter; they have sprouted and two of them have leaves. Is it too early for me to place them outside? And, when I do, does it matter where I place them? Do they like morning sun or afternoon sun? Or does it not matter in our climate zone?

Thanks for your answer,

carl

It is too early to place them outdoors. Wait until about mid-May and set them first in a completely shaded area, gradually moving them to filtered morning sun and then full morning sunshine. The entire process should take only about a week. Keep them out of afternoon sun or the leaves will burn. Best wishes with your maples!
