Do I need to remove the topsoil on my front lawn before creating a berm on top of it? My husband says yes. I am looking for the easy way out so say no.

The easy way rules! If you put top soil over the lawn the lawn will die and decompose so there's no need to remove it. You might want to slice through it in several places to make breaks in the thatch so water can drain, but aside from that, you won't need to remove the turf. Best wishes with your project!
