ive been having trouble with my lawn. i live in new jersey. it will be green on large portions and 10 feet away there will be a spot around 10'x10' that no matter what i do never grows right. it will always be shorter by a inch. seed never seems to grow properly, it will start to grow and in mid summer it will die and weeds will take over. i spend hundreds of dollars on fertilizer and grub killer

How frustrating for you! Grass won't grow in shady spots so if the spot in question gets shade, that may account for the problem. If it is a sunny spot, perhaps there is some underlying problem with the soil. I would dig up the area and add some organic matter (compost, aged manure, or whatever is locally available) and then rake the area smooth and overseed with fresh grass seed. If the soil is compacted it will keep roots from penetrating deeply so adding organic matter should cure the problem. Hope so!
