Now that spring is finally here, what is the best way to fix the lawn from a winter of pet damage? The lawn in the area that my dog uses is bare of grass in some areas, green in others, and patches of brown

Concentrated salts in your dog's urine is what caused burning and death of the turfgrass. Dig out the dead areas and turn the soil a bit to move fresh soil up to the surface, then add a little compost and level the area before reseeding. In the other areas that look as though they are about to keel over, rake them out and reseed them as well. You can lessen the damage if you hose off the area as soon as possible after your dog urinates. This will help dilute the salts in the urine. Best wishes with your lawn!
