The Q&A Archives: mail order bare root perennials

Question: I ordered some plants from a mail order place & they have come w no instructions. How do I care for bare root plants that I will not be able to plant for 3or4 weeks.
thanks,linda h

Answer: It is important that the plants be stored in a cool, dark place - one that remains above freezing but under 40F. Set the roots in some dampened sawdust or peat moss. Not too wet, just damp enough to keep the roots from completely drying out. When it's time to plant outdoors, just dig the planting holes and set the roots in the soil. They should grow nicely for you. Enjoy!
