The Q&A Archives: What Kind of Grass Can I Get to Grow?

Question: Hi,We live in Northern Virginia and we face NW. We get morning sunlight only in our front yard. No one on our street has grass due to the shade. What grass is best to plant for our region, and in seed or sod? Thank you!

Answer: Turfgrass really requires sunshine in order to grow well so any turf you plant in a shady area will need to be reseeded or resodded every few years. Tall fescue sod is moderately drought and shade tolerant and performs well throughout Virginia. It is adapted to a wide range of soil conditions so it might be the best variety for your landscape. Or, you may want to consider planting and evergreen groundcover instead. Best wishes with your landscape.
